Hosanna! Worship Dance Ministry – Who We Are:
Our ministry leads three types of dances (No experience or dance training is necessary, with exception to the performance team).
“I will praise God’s name in song and glorify Him with thanksgiving. This will please the Lord.”
Psalm 69:30-31
1. Praise & Worship Dance involves movements the congregation may join in to experience a more enriching, powerful worship experience. Movements should be simple enough for most individuals to perform comfortably. Dances may include flags, billows, banners, and other worship tools. God moves powerfully in the unity of our worship. “For where two or three gather together because they are mine, I am there among them." Matthew 18:20
· These teams focus on praise & worship music and receive most of their direction from the worship and choir directors. These teams continue to be lead by adult volunteers; however, the Spirit Dancers are given more responsibility in the choreography of dances and in assisting the younger dancers.
a. This Alleluia Dancers mission is: “Let them praise His name in the dance; let them sing praises unto Him with the timbrel & harp.” Psalm 149:3
b. The Spirit Dancers mission is: “Now, the Lord is the Spirit, and wherever the Spirit of the Lord is, He gives freedom. 2 Corinthians 3:1
2. Interpretive Worship Dance involves interpretive dance for a powerful, expressive visual display of God’s glory. Movements should be simple enough for most individuals to perform comfortably. Dances may include all forms of worship tools to enhance the message.
· This team’s mission is to use their bodies as a tool to reveal God’s glory to the earth: “…Glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.” 1 Corinthians 6:20
· “For the time will come when all the earth will be filled, as the waters fill the sea, with an awareness of the glory of the Lord.” Habakkuk 2:14
· “Here am I and the children the Lord has given me. We are the signs and symbols in Israel from the Lord Almighty, who dwells on Mount Zion.” Isaiah 8:18
3. Prophetic Dance. A dancer can hear from God and deliver a message through movement (in a tangible way) just as someone with the gift of prophesy can hear from God and deliver a verbal message. Prophetic dance can be planned or spontaneous. “But one who prophesies is helping others grow in the Lord, encouraging and comforting them.” 1 Corinthians 14:3
Definition of worship, “to ascribe worth to, to bow down to, to give homage to.” Worship, therefore, should involve one or more of these characteristics. Worshipping is not about attending a church service or event; it involves a choice on the worshipper to give adoration and homage, and to ascribe worth to God. Almost every Biblical reference to worship involves a physical action; Biblical worship involves shouting, clapping, lifting up hands, leaping, dancing, bowing, and kneeling (See scriptural references).
To not express any emotion or movement in worship is not Biblically supported. “I will give them hearts that will recognize me as the LORD. They will be my people, and I will be their God, for they will return to me wholeheartedly.” Jeremiah 24:7
“Worship is a movement of our hearts, our thoughts, and our wills toward God’s heart, thoughts, and will… To be a worshipper is to fall in love with God…” (Darlene Zschech)
· Worship is a form of sacrifice to God. God required the best of the flock and the crops. When we worship, we should offer our best praises. “Be sure to set aside the best portions of the gifts given to you as your gifts to the LORD.” Numbers 18:29
· “I plead with you to give your bodies to God. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice – the kind He will except. When you think of what He has done for you, is this too much to ask?” Romans 12:1
· Dance is a visual and powerful means of worship, a deeply spiritual experience that should never be viewed as a performance or entertainment. Rather, it is a shared experience between the dancer and the people as a means of the Holy Spirit touching and convicting people, lifting their hearts, assisting them with prayer. God will use a dancer as a mediator to minister to individuals in the church. Rhythmic, artistic, and emotional movement can speak volumes in communications with our God.
· Dance can soften the heart of a non-believer in order to receive God’s message.
· “Dance is a two-edged sword in the hands of the believer as it administers and imparts God’s Word; and it conveys the power of that Word to bring salvation to the afflicted and freedom to those who were bound.” (Restoring The Dance: Ann Stevenson)
· Each one of us is a part of the body of Christ. The Spirit of God uses our bodies to dance and declare His works on the earth. He is Lord of our bodies and when He dances through us, our flesh is taken away and all the people see is Christ. “Now all of you together are Christ's body, and each one of you is a separate and necessary part of it.” 1 Corinthians 12:27
· Dance, with its free and beautiful movements, can be the form of human expression equal to the task of praising our deity. It is one of the only forms of praise that can fully express exuberant joy and extravagant love. God created dance for His pleasure. “You are worthy, O Lord our God, to receive glory and honor and power. For you created everything, and it is for your pleasure that they exist and were created.” Revelation 4:11
· When we move in one accord and with a clean heart, powerful healings and deliverances occur. “And the disciples went everywhere and preached, and the Lord worked with them, confirming what they said by many miraculous signs.” Mark 16:20
· God inhabits the praises of His people. “But You are holy, You that inhabits the praises of Israel.” Psalm 22:3
Prayer: Intercessory prayer is needed for the dance group. Prayer should always happen before any practice session, church worship, or the choreography/development of movements. “Don't worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done.” Philippians 4:6
Dancer Requirements:
It is not necessary to be a trained dancer in order to worship and minister in Christian dance. All that is required is to focus our movements on worshipping God. Movements may feel ‘mechanical’ and not like ‘free worship’ at first; however, they will come with time. Often the large body movements come first, then finer points later. A dance to glorify the Lord only requires commitment on our part. The Lord will do the rest, as God does not call us to service without equipping the call.
“I plead with you to give your bodies to God. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice – the kind He will except. When you think of what He has done for you, is this too much to ask?” Romans 12:1
“For in Him we live and move and exist…” Acts 17:28
· Be Right: Before dancing, our own relationship with the Lord must be right (both externally and internally), or the worship will not be real, and would be evident to those watching. We must have a personal, committed relationship to Jesus Christ and walk consistent with Biblical guidelines. “But I know! I, the LORD, search all hearts and examine secret motives. I give all people their due rewards, according to what their actions deserve." Jeremiah 17:10 We must also be holy as Christ is holy. Our hands must be clean.
o “And no one can become a high priest simply because he wants such an honor. He has to be called by God for this work, just as Aaron was.” Hebrews 5:4-6
o “If you keep yourself pure, you will be a utensil God can use for His purpose. Your life will be clean, and you will be ready for the Master to use you for every good work.” 2 Timothy 2:21
· Grow in Christ: Seek spiritual development by: Attending Hosanna! Church on a regular basis, spending time in the Word and prayer, being involved in a Christian Fellowship circle.
§ A key question to ask yourself – Are you more like Christ than a year ago? “…And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.” Romans 12:2
· Develop Your Gift: Play worship CD’s at home and move freely. This develops your calling and blesses our team. A teachable spirit desires to grow and learn.
o “Do not neglect the spiritual gift within you, which was bestowed upon you … take pains with these things; be absorbed in them, so that your progress may be evident to all. Pay close attention to yourself and to your teaching; persevere in these things; for as you do this you will insure salvation both for yourself and for those who hear you.” 1 Timothy 4:14
· Be Sensitive: We must be sensitive to the leading of the Holy Spirit and not “do our own thing” for our own glory (John 15:4-5) We are to seek His will, plans, and directions, not our own. "Be sure that you make everything according to the pattern I have shown you here on the mountain.” Exodus 25:40
o “I don't speak on my own authority. The Father who sent me gave me His own instructions as to what I should say.” John 12: 49
o “Now go, and do as I have told you. I will help you speak well, and I will tell you what to say." Exodus 4:12
· Unite: Unity amongst Dance Ministry Team is a must as any tension will be very visible. Respect the ideas of all members. Maintain eye contact where appropriate and correct facial expressions. God blesses our unity. (Psalm 133) “So wherever you assemble, I want men to pray with holy hands lifted up to God, free from anger and controversy.” 1 Timothy 2:8
o “How good and pleasant it is when we dwell together in unity and praise the Lord!” Psalm 133:1
· Seek Approval: Agreement with our church’s leadership. If opposition arises, we must be patient and pray. Do not take matters into our own hands. The Lord will resolve the problem in His own time and way. “ Patient endurance is what you need now, so you will continue to do God's will. Then you will receive all that he has promised.” Hebrews 10:36
· Share: Our group builds off of the strengths and ideas of each other. Dancers may receive movements to share with our team. Be willing to share if you are called upon by the Lord to choreograph these movements. “Now all of you together are Christ's body, and each one of you is a separate and necessary part of it.” 1 Corinthians 12:27
· Take Ownership: “As each one has received a special gift, employ it in serving one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.” 1 Peter 4:10 Be faithful in attendance. Pray for the ministry and for Hosanna!.
o When you step out to lead or minister in Holy dance, you are functioning as a priest before God’s throne. “You… will be set apart from the common people. They will be My priests and will minister to Me.” Exodus 28:1
§ “…minister regularly before the Ark of The Lord’s Covenant, doing whatever needed to be done each day.” 1 Chron 16:37
§ “For you are not like that, for you are a chosen people. You are a kingdom of priests, God’s holy nation, His very own possession. This is so you can show others the goodness of God, for He has called you out of darkness and into His wonderful light.” 1 Peter 2:9
· Support Others: Grow in fellowship and in love with one another. Pay attention to the needs of others. Pray together. Have an attitude or submission and humility. “And God himself has commanded that we must love not only Him but our Christian brothers and sisters, too.” 1 John 4:21
Dance Tips and Choreography:
· All movements should be focused on glorifying our Lord. Movements should be purposeful, with beauty and dignity. Prayer should begin all choreography. "But I warn you--unless you obey God better than the teachers of religious law and the Pharisees do, you can't enter the Kingdom of Heaven at all!” Matthew 5:20
o If we fail to connect God’s Word to our movement, we will become vulnerable to the enemy, and our dance will wither like the grass of the field. “The grass withers, and the flowers fade, but the Word of God stands forever.” Isaiah 40:8
o Whatever offering you bring to the Lord, if it is presented with a humble and submissive worshippers’ heart, will be a sweet smelling savor to the Lord. It doesn’t matter how technically perfect or advanced the dance is, nor does it matter if the dance is perfect.
o Keep movements within capabilities of dancers. It’s better to do something simple very well than to do more complicated moves poorly. “And my message and my preaching were very plain. I did not use wise and persuasive speeches, but the Holy Spirit was powerful among you.” 1 Corinthians 2: 4
o Facial expressions and gestures are very important and will have an impact. What is on the inside shows. Our dance is empty without the appropriate facial expressions. “When Moses came down the mountain carrying the stone tablets inscribed with the terms of the covenant, he wasn't aware that his face glowed because he had spoken to the LORD face to face.” Exodus 34:29
§ “He shall pray to God, and He will delight in him, He shall see His face with joy, For He restores to man His righteousness.” Job 33:26
· Entrance and Exit
o Stay out of site before and after dancing.
o Enter and exit in an orderly fashion. Do not talk during the entry or exit.
o Do not fidget and adjust garments or hair before a song begins. Eyes are drawn to the most movement, so the congregation’s eyes will be on your movements.
o Most of the emphasis on a dance is during the finale. Make sure the finale is well rehearsed. The congregation will overlook many mistakes during a dance if the ending is planned well.
o Never bow or take credit for a dance. Give all the glory to the Lord.
· Choreography Tips
o Movements received from the Holy Spirit may not develop in chronological order and will not be the polished finished article. Keep playing the music over and over. The dance will gradually develop and become more polished.
o Try to utilize most of the available floor rather than dancing in one spot.
o Don’t choreograph every word, rather lump phrases or try to convey the general sense of the words.
o It’s okay to stand still and hold a pose.
o Movements at different levels make the dance look more interesting – some movements high in the air, some at ground level, some in between. Vary the angles. Some of the group may even face backward for part of the dance.
o Try to have dancers move differently. If everyone does the same thing, it tends to look monotone. Try mirroring for an alternative.
o The dance starts from the entrance to the exit. Plan seating for easy access. The group should move together.
o Relax for graceful, flowing movements. For gracefulness of the hands, lead with the wrists and open the fingers.
o Negative words (sin, suffering, shame, etc) may require tense, uncoordinated, lacking gracefulness movements.
o Keep in time with the music and each other.
o Practice A LOT in order to produce quality! Being well-rehearsed will allow you to focus on worship, rather than the next movement.
§ "As you harvest each of your crops, bring me a choice sample of the first day's harvest. It must be offered to the LORD your God…” Exodus 23:19
o Singing while doing worship performances usually takes away rather than adds to the impact of the dance. Singing may be done during “Worship Dance,” but usually not “Performance Worship.” Do not chew gum while dancing.
Wardrobe – Praise Garments:
Dance in worship is a powerful ministry that communicates in a visual way. Praise Garments can enhance the message of the dance, and should definitely not detract from it.
§ Modesty Guidelines –If the Lord was here, would He approve?
1. Garment Necklines should be no lower than 2” below the collarbone. The chest must not be exposed, even when bending over.
2. Garments must be loose-fitting and should not draw attention to any areas of the body. Undergarments must not be visible through garments.
3. Women should wear a padded bra. It may be appropriate to wear two shirts to eliminate any opacity in fabrics.
4. Shoulders should not be exposed. Sleeved shirts are more appropriate.
5. Midsection must not show. It is recommended that a leotard (or long undershirt) be worn under praise garments to eliminate the possibility of exposing the mid-section during movements.
6. Skirt-lengths must be below the knee.
7. Culottes or pants must be worn underneath all skirts so as not to expose the leg above the knee.
8. Makeup must not be too overpowering as to draw attention to your face and away from movements.
9. Jewelry should not be overpowering.
Wardrobe – Praise Garments – In the Splendor of Holiness:
Break out of the habit of being plain. We are called to minister with all the vibrancy and enthusiasm of David before the Lord. The earth is the Lord’s creation, and it is full of color and design.
When God gave instructions to Moses to make priestly garments, He was very specific as to color, design, and skill of construction. He described artistic details of gold and silver ornamentation.
Garment, Flag, and Banner Care
Remember that your Praise Garments are tools of ministry. They belong to the Lord. Treat them with respect that priestly garments deserve, as this attitude will be reflected in the anointing that rests upon them. Putting on Praise Garments signifies that your time and energy are set apart in service to the King. This liberates us to dance as David danced, with full power and passion. (See scriptural references)
Warfare:
· Mighty Weapons: Praise & worship are powerful spiritual weapons against the powers of darkness. When we move in one accord, powerful healings and deliverances occur. Dance can soften the heart of a non-believer in order to receive God’s message. God inhabits the praises of His people.
o “Put on all of God's armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies and tricks of the Devil. For we are not fighting against people made of flesh and blood, but against the evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against those mighty powers of darkness who rule this world, and against wicked spirits in the heavenly realms. Use every piece of God's armor to resist the enemy in the time of evil, so that after the battle you will still be standing firm.” Ephesians 6:11-13
o “every stroke shall be to the sound of the tambourine and the harp.” Isaiah 30:32 (Tamourines are carried by dancers who are being used as warfare against the enemy.
· Target for Attack: Christian dance ministries are prime targets for spiritual attack, which may come in the form of: illness, discord, mechanical failures (including car breakdowns), and opposition. Possible objections from others:
o Lack of modesty in Praise Garments, poorly presented choreographed dances, dancers hearts not being right with God. Aim to get these areas right to minimize objections.
o Scriptural support. Some feel that dance is not scriptural. See ‘scripture’ section.
o Change. Some don’t like change when introducing this ministry. It makes them feel uncomfortable and poses a threat.
o In all objection situations, it is important to pray for the Lord’s guidance and for those who oppose.
Leadership and Teaching of Worship Dance
· Lead and teach according to Biblical principals of worship dance and Hosanna!’s Teaching Statement. “Where there is no vision, the people perish...” Proverbs 29:18 Pray for clear vision.
· Lead without being the focus of attention. Direct others’ focus toward worshipping God . “Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age." Matthew 28:20
· Provide an opportunity for others to actively be involved in giving praise to God. “As each one has received a special gift, employee it in serving one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.” 1 Peter 4:10
· Walk the talk. Assume that others do not know how to worship; therefore, lead as you teach in what you say and in what you do. “For an elder must be a man whose life cannot be spoken against. He must be faithful to his wife. He must exhibit self-control, live wisely, and have a good reputation. He must enjoy having guests in his home and must be able to teach.” 1 Timothy 3:2
o “But as for you, promote the kind of living that reflects right teaching” Titus: 2:1
· “And you yourself must be an example to them by doing good deeds of every kind. Let everything you do reflect the integrity and seriousness of your teaching. 8Let your teaching be so correct that it can't be criticized. Then those who want to argue will be ashamed because they won't have anything bad to say about us.” Titus 2:7-8
· “He gave his life to free us from every kind of sin, to cleanse us, and to make us his very own people, totally committed to doing what is right.15You must teach these things and encourage your people to do them, correcting them when necessary. You have the authority to do this, so don't let anyone ignore you or disregard what you say.” Titus 2:14-15
· Pray for wisdom and knowledge to properly lead and administrate those who are in this ministry under God’s authority. “Give me wisdom and knowledge to rule them properly, for who is able to govern this great nation of yours?" 2 Chronicles 1:10
· Have an understanding mind and be able to govern this ministry knowing the difference between right and wrong. “Give me an understanding mind so that I can govern your people well and know the difference between right and wrong. For who by himself is able to govern this great nation of yours?" I Kings 3:9
· Be filled with the Spirit of God, in wisdom and understanding, in knowledge and all manner of workmanship to choreograph and design excelled and anointed dances. Exodus 35:31-35 “The LORD has filled Bezalel with the Spirit of God, giving him great wisdom, intelligence, and skill in all kinds of crafts. He is able to create beautiful objects from gold, silver, and bronze. He is skilled in cutting and setting gemstones and in carving wood. In fact, he has every necessary skill. And the LORD has given both him and Oholiab son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan, the ability to teach their skills to others. The LORD has given them special skills as jewelers, designers, weavers, and embroiderers in blue, purple, and scarlet yarn on fine linen cloth. They excel in all the crafts needed for the work.”
· Allow the Spirit of God within you to reveal the deep creativity of God in choreography, lighting, and garments. He will show you dances that eyes have not seen nor entered into the hearts of man. “And my message and my preaching were very plain. I did not use wise and persuasive speeches, but the Holy Spirit was powerful among you.” 1 Corinthians 2:4
· Be teachable while doing His work. God wants your trust and your actions. “They want to be known as teachers of the law of Moses, but they don't know what they are talking about, even though they seem so confident”. 1 Timothy 1:7
o “Now go, and do as I have told you. I will help you speak well, and I will tell you what to say [through your dance]." Exodus 4:12
· Judge fairly and according to God’s word when disagreements arise. “5He appointed judges throughout the nation in all the fortified cities,6and he gave them these instructions: "Always think carefully before pronouncing judgment. Remember that you do not judge to please people but to please the LORD. He will be with you when you render the verdict in each case that comes before you. 7Fear the LORD and judge with care, for the LORD our God does not tolerate perverted justice, partiality, or the taking of bribes." 2 Chronicles 19:5-7
· Leaders must be patient and kind and not afraid to speak the truth. 24The Lord's servants must not quarrel but must be kind to everyone. They must be able to teach effectively and be patient with difficult people.25They should gently teach those who oppose the truth. Perhaps God will change those people's hearts, and they will believe the truth.” 2 Timothy 2:24-25
· Teachers are held up to a higher accountability with God because they have the opportunity to lead or mislead others in His name. Make it a point to design dances according to the pattern which was shown to you in your time with God. “But there were also false prophets in Israel, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will cleverly teach their destructive heresies about God and even turn against their Master who bought them. Theirs will be a swift and terrible end.” 2 Peter 2:1 "But I warn you--unless you obey God better than the teachers of religious law and the Pharisees do, you can't enter the Kingdom of Heaven at all!” Matthew 5:20
o "Be sure that you make everything according to the pattern I have shown you here on the mountain.” Exodus 25:40
· You do not speak or dance on your own authority, so whatever you do should be pleasing to God. Our Father gives you instructions on the visual design of the dance in order for His words to speak through you. “I don't speak on my own authority. The Father who sent me gave me His own instructions as to what I should say.” John 12: 49
· “You must bring everything I command you--your burnt offerings, your sacrifices, your tithes, your special gifts, and your offerings to fulfill a vow--to the place the LORD your God will choose for His name to be honored.” Deut 12:11
· When you speak through dance, dance as though God were speaking through you. “Are you called to be a speaker? Then speak as though God himself were speaking through you. Are you called to help others? Do it with all the strength and energy that God supplies. Then God will be given glory in everything through Jesus Christ. All glory and power belong to him forever and ever. Amen.” 1 Peter 4:11
· Show your dedication to the ministry by attendance and your works. “Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, handling accurately the word of truth.” 2 Timothy 2:15 We cannot lead others where we have not been ourselves. Worship God in your daily lives.
· Be willing to delegate the ministry duties to gain support, commitment, and respect. “The various divisions of priests and Levites will serve in the Temple of God. Others with skills of every kind will volunteer, and the leaders and the entire nation are at your command." 1 Chronicles 28:21

Engaging in Non-Worship Dance:
Worship Dance must be reserved for God alone. Anytime we engage in dance for showmanship, bringing glory to ourselves, or to please others, we displease our Father. Worship Dance must be ministered with a pure heart.

Many Hebrew & Greek words for dance and physical movement were translated to “Rejoice” or “Praise” in English. Because of this, English speaking people have lost the true physical meanings of these words. Dance was a vital piece of worship in the Bible. Worship dance, in the Bible, is very seldom done as a solo; it is a ‘group dance.’

· To Signal God’s Presence – Lifting flags in worship follows the action of Moses as he lifted his rod as a visible sign of God’s presence, power and authority.
· To Declare Our Allegiance – As we wave flags, we admit our loyalty as members of the Lord’s army in the presence of men/women on earth before powers and principalities in the heavens.

Jesus is the ultimate ‘flag.’ He was raised on a pole to secure our redemption, spirit, soul, and body. He was a flag raised in honor and respect to God; A flag raised on a cross to let all mankind know that the King of Kings was in residence with His people. He was the flag of victory for all mankind for all time.
He is God’s banner of love over us. He is the banner of the nations. He is the banner that beckons to the gentiles. He is the banner on the high mountain. His name is the name we raise our banners to in worship and praise. He is the one that equips us for battle as a troop with banners.
